Ukraine’s defense minister calls on males abroad to join fight against Russia

Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, is calling on Ukrainian men aged 25 to 60 living abroad to voluntarily join the fight against Russian forces invading Kyiv.

Discussions are underway regarding those who do not come forward willingly. Umerov emphasizes the importance of serving one’s country and considers it an honor. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been asked for an additional 500,000 soldiers, the German press reported.

The sensitive mobilization issue is being debated between top military officers and the government. With an estimated 650,000 Ukrainian men of military age having left the country, Ukraine faces challenges in maintaining a stable inflow of troops amid an attrition war with Russia.

Despite the ongoing conflict and the withholding of aid by the US and the EU, Zelenskyy expresses confidence in continued support from these allies. Russia has made gains around the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, but Kyiv claims significant Russian casualties in the battle.
