Spain Enforces Hospital Mask Mandate Amidst Rise in Influenza and COVID-19 Infections

From January 10 onward, Spain has reenacted the mandate for masks in healthcare settings throughout the nation due to a seasonal surge in influenza and COVID-19 cases, according to Reuters. The Ministry of Health has made it obligatory for masks to be worn in clinics and hospitals while also strongly recommending their use in private clinics, pharmacies, and dental offices.

“Protecting the most vulnerable is a matter of common sense,” emphasized Health Minister Monica Garcia.

Several Spanish regions had already implemented this measure the previous week. The decision to lift the mask mandate will lie with each region, contingent upon a sustained decrease in infection rates for at least two weeks.

Spain was among the last European countries to relax mask-wearing regulations following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, recommendations for mask usage in public transportation lasted until February 2023 and remained in place in medical facilities and pharmacies until July.
