Global Alarm: Cases of Cancer Among Young People Have Exploded!

Cases of cancer among young people have witnessed an explosive increase globally, according to recent information published by the Wall Street Journal. According to the data, diagnosis rates in the United States reached a new peak in 2019, with 107.8 cases per 100,000 people under the age of 50, representing a significant increase of 12.8% compared to the year 2000 when they were recorded at 95.6. A study published in BMJ Oncology last year highlighted a significant global increase in cancers among individuals under 50, with the highest rates recorded in North America, Australia, and Western Europe. The Observer’s editorial team brings this information to the public on January 12, 2024.

Doctors are now in a race against time to discover the causes of this alarming increase and to identify young people at a higher risk of developing cancer.

Changes in lifestyle, such as reduced physical activity, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, and exposure to new toxins, are suspected to contribute to this worrisome rise in cancer cases among younger generations.

“We are observing a significant shift in the patient profile, with patients becoming increasingly younger,” said Dr. Andrea Cercek, coordinator of a program for patients with early gastrointestinal cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

“There may be a change in the environment, either in diet, medication, or something else that we have not identified yet.”

Although the cancer death rate in the United States has decreased by a third since 1991 due to a reduction in the number of smokers and improvements in treatment, the increase in cases of early-onset cancer presents a major challenge. A concerning aspect is that one in five new colorectal cancer patients in 2019 was under 55, almost double the figures from 1995.

These younger patients are often diagnosed at advanced stages, and the colorectal cancer death rate among those under 50 is increasing, unlike the rate recorded for those over 65, where a decrease is observed.
